JERICHO ROAD MARKS PROGRESS IN CENTRAL CITY NEIGHBORHOOD

The Jericho Road Episcopal Housing Initiative is marking 16 months of progress. Among the faith-based nonprofit's accomplishments are relationship building, property acquisition, and houses sold and prepared for sale in Central City.

Executive Director of Jericho Road, Brad Powers  is humbled by Jericho Road's success. "Jericho Road will continue to grow resources so that we can help provide the highest quality, affordable homes for our neighbors in Central City and the families of New Orleans," Powers said.

  • Jericho Road has earned support from community, faith-based, and elected leaders in Central City.

  • Jericho Road and CrossRoads Missions Home Building Partnership

Jericho Road acquires properties and prepares sites for construction. CrossRoads volunteers assist Jericho Road with homebuilding.

  • Youth Construction Training Partnership

New Orleans youth learn the construction trade on the Jericho Road homebuilding site. Reconcile New Orleans manages the young workers on site while Jericho Road volunteers and CrossRoads Missions staff assist as mentors and role models.

  • Public Safety and Affordable Housing Partnership

Jericho Road brings information about home buying opportunities directly to Orleans Criminal Sheriff's Office employees. The partnership establishes a permanent law enforcement presence to foster a more stable environment in Central City. Deputies serve as role models to neighborhood youth.

PROPERTY ACQUISITION

  • Jericho Road was an early and enthusiastic participant in the City of New Orleans' process  to clear property titles for redevelopment. The City's Targeted Neighborhood Redevelopment Program establishes a long term solution to housing shortages.
  • Jericho Road was granted 50 adjudicated properties under the City's Targeted Redevelopment Program.
  • Jericho Road was the first nonprofit post-Katrina to gain property titles under the City's program.
  • To date, Jericho Road has obtained 25 clear titles to adjudicated properties.

HOMEOWNERSHIP UPDATE

  • Jericho Road has sold two homes.
  • Three Jericho Road homes under contract, and one is available for showing.
  • Jericho Road has broken ground and begun construction on nine new homes.

THE FUTURE

  • Jericho Road expects to begin construction on three Jericho Road homes every forty days through its homebuilding partnership with CrossRoads Missions.
